02 · How we assess candidates

How we assess candidates.

Three plain questions, asked of every candidate for every role. No scores, no black boxes.

  1. 01

    Can they do the work?

We test technical depth and relevant experience through a structured conversation about the work they've done, with examples. With the candidate's consent, referees help confirm it.

  2. 02

Will they suit the team and environment?

We look at working style, motivation, and fit with the team, location and working pattern, so the move makes sense for both sides.

  3. 03

    Are they eligible?

We check right to work in Australia and, where a role genuinely needs it, citizenship and clearance status. We take reasonable steps to confirm clearance status via the sponsoring agency or the employer's security officer.

03 · Clearance and eligibility

Clearance and eligibility FAQ.

Only some of the roles we recruit for need a clearance. This is general guidance only. The Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) is the authoritative source.

What do the clearance levels mean?

In general terms:

LevelBroadly allows access to
BaselineClassified information and assets up to PROTECTED
NV1Up to SECRET (Negative Vetting 1)
NV2Up to TOP SECRET (Negative Vetting 2)
TS-PA (formerly PV)TOP SECRET and certain caveated or compartmented information (Top Secret-Privileged Access, which has replaced Positive Vetting; existing PV holders move to TS-PA at revalidation)

Who can hold a clearance?

Australian citizenship is generally required. In limited cases, a sponsoring agency may seek a citizenship eligibility waiver for a role. That decision rests with the sponsor and the vetting agency, not with a recruiter. You also need a background that can be checked.

Who sponsors a clearance?

Clearances are sponsor-led. You can't apply for one yourself, and recruiters can't sponsor one. The employer sponsors it, and must be an Australian Government agency or a Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) member at the right level, for a genuine role that needs it. Stormcrest does not sponsor clearances and is not a DISP member.

Can I apply for a role that needs a clearance if I don't hold one?

Sometimes. Some employers will sponsor an eligible candidate, while others need someone who already holds the clearance. We'll tell you which applies to each role, and we never promise that a role will lead to a clearance.

Should I list my clearance level online?

No. Clearance holders are advised not to publicise their clearance level online, including on social media and professional networking profiles. Share it only when it's needed for a specific role.

Why do you ask for my clearance level?

We collect it privately on the registration form, only to match you to suitable roles. It is never shown publicly, and it's shared with a client's security or recruitment staff only with your consent.

How do you check clearance status?

Before we introduce you for a role that needs a clearance, we take reasonable steps to confirm your clearance status, via the sponsoring agency or the employer's security officer, who gives final confirmation.

What won't you do?

  • Ask for classified material or your vetting paperwork
  • Share clearance details beyond the hiring organisation's security or recruitment team without your consent
  • Overstate your clearance status
  • Promise that a role will lead to a clearance
